Workshop Manager

Workshop Manager – York Pullman Bus Company Limited.

York Pullman Bus Company Ltd is seeking a Workshop Manager based at their principal site facility in York.

This is a senior management role and is full time (minimum) 40 regular hours per week [no shifts] working Monday to Friday 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs.

  • Job Description

To manage our busy workshops that are responsible for maintaining our fleet of 150 buses driving performance and supporting our operations team in providing a high standard of maintenance in a timely manner.

As a key manager, you will support the Directors of the business in ensuring the efficient, effective and profitable operation of the business in meeting its aims and objectives, whilst upholding the high standards of service delivery that has become the hallmark of the operation.

  • Principal Elements of the role for Workshop Manager

Staff Management – Working with our experienced and motivated workshop team to

  • Ensure that the planning of work within the workshops meets the operating requirements of the business, especially at peak times
  • Manage and deliver agreed key performance targets
  • Develop and manage training plans for the workshop team

Compliance – To lead the workshop team in ensuring compliance with regulatory authorities including

  • Manage and develop where necessary standard operating policies and procedures that meets current legislation
  • Ensure all vehicles are regularly inspected within DVSA agreed time-frames
  • Set and meet targets ensuring that all vehicles are thoroughly maintained and well presented in accordance with Company procedures and exceed DVSA standards
  • Manage and deliver agreed plans and budgets, including established levels of servicing and MOT quality

Cost Management – To control all workshop cost lines through

  • Robust and detailed planning
  • Prudent and controlled purchasing by parts procurement staff
  • Manage and oversee agreed plans and budgets for parts and other service purchasing
  • Bench-marking against different suppliers and across the First Bus family, to ensure price and delivery terms are industry leading

Other Management Functions including

  • to ensure all workshop support software/programmes and diagnostic equipment are used effectively within the workshop
  • working with our internal partners and consultants, manage the Health & safety functions of the workshop
  • attendance of the wider senior Management team meetings
  • manage and maintain expiry dates of MOT tests, vehicle excise duty and equipment certifications and inspections as necessary and appropriate
  • ensure correct completion of wheel torque logs and similar systems.

  • Person Specification

Key Requirements [essential]

  • A minimum City & Guilds Qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years direct workshop operational experience, to include supervision and management of staff and budgets
  • Demonstrable good knowledge of the workings of the DVSA and the minimum standards they operate to.
  • A wide and in-depth experience of a workshop environment, in particular for maintaining vehicles to DVSA standards
  • Experience of risk management processes

Beneficial Requirements [preferred but not essential]

  • Have experience of formal risk assessment processes along with the subsequent actions that follow
  • To hold a Transport Managers Certificate of Professional Competence and where more than 5 years old, have completed recent refresher courses or;
  • Be prepared to work towards completing a Transport Managers Certificate of Professional Competence
